For Akin and Toro Osuntoki who are founders of Aanu, Aanu is not simply another charitable initiative but Christian ministry of love and compassion shaped by the heart of Jesus.
The couple, who have dedicated their lives to serving God believe that Aanu exists because God called them to bring His love and compassion to the elderly who are some of the most overlooked people in society.
The inspiration for Aanu’s journey began in 2009, when God began to stir their hearts with compassion for the many people around us struggling to survive. By 2011, the growing awareness of human suffering had deepened into a conviction that God could them to help. The words of Isaiah 58, especially verses 6b–7, ignited in them a passion to act:
“Remove the chains of oppression and the yoke of injustice, and let the oppressed go free. Share your food with the hungry and open your homes to the homeless poor. Give clothes to those who have nothing to wear, and do not refuse to help your own relatives.”
Since then, Akin and Toro have done their best to bring Christian compassion to a hurting world. Yet at the end of 2015, God used two significant events to redirect their attention toward establishing a foundation for full‑time charitable work. The first was Akin’s short‑term mission trip to the Philippines in October 2015, where God opened his eyes to a model of love and compassion that He calls believers to demonstrate. The second was a personal visit to Nigeria in November of the same year, where Akin once again witnessed deep suffering—particularly among pensioners and the elderly.
After these experiences, Akin and Toro felt an overwhelming mandate to set up Aanu and to make a difference in the lives of this vulnerable group. This was thus the beginning of Aanu, a Yoruba word meaning compassion; started in 2016 and was formally established 4th April 2018 with a mission to simply serve as facilitators of God’s love and compassion to the aged.
At the heart of the foundation’s work is The Gathering Place, a Day Centre where older adults can encounter agape love, enjoy fellowship, experience social interaction, and receive physical and mental stimulation, along with refreshment and care.
Akin, currently a pastor at the Ealing Community Church and Toro who works for the NHS, serve together in this calling following the instructions of 1 John 3:17–18
“If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? … Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”
Their lives are dedicated to demonstrating the compassion of Christ in practical, life‑giving ways.
