There was a song that we used to sing when I was young:
“When I was just a little girl
I asked my mother, “What will I be?, will I be pretty, will I be rich?”
Here’s what she said to me:
Que Sera, Sera
Whatever will be, will be
The future’s not ours to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be” .
I agree to some extent with the lyrics of this song, The future is not ours to see……..
When we were young we dreamt of what we will become when we grew up. You might have wished to have a perfect spouse, well- behaved children, a nice job and so on. In other words, everything had to be good, there was never a dark moment.
But this doesn’t happen often when you grow up or when you are treading the path of life. Disappointment comes, trials appear, we get betrayed, death occurs, sickness comes, delays in achieving your goals happens, the perfect family you dreamt of is non-existent or is taking a long time occurring. We then come up with the expression, “such is life” or “c’est la vie”.
As Christians, once we have decided to follow Jesus, we do not seem to realise that we have laid everything such as our lives, education, the person we will marry, the career path we will choose, where we will live etc., into his hands. Once we give God the control of our lives, he makes the right choices for us because he loves us. Taking a reference from the bible, God loved the Israelites so much that he chose everything for them, including the food they ate. (Leviticus 11).
Knowing what God will choose for us in life is never predictable. The car you would rather ride in, the country or neighbourhood you would rather live in, the career path you would rather tread, the person you will rather marry, the number of children you will rather have etc….. might not fall into the plan you have prepared. You want to live in the countryside, God wants you to live in the city, you want to live in the city,God wants you to live in the countryside, you want to have a business but God wants you to be a missionary or a pastor – that sounds familiar!
God loves us so much and he knows what is good for us, he knows where we will thrive, the right husband, the right wife, the right career, he knows everything and when he chooses, he never gets it wrong.
The journey is never fun, it is hard, over-whelming, makes you unsociable sometimes, it can be intense but be prayerful, focused, persevere and make sure you obey God. Hebrews 10:36, says: “You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”
These are some of the points you will need to be aware of when embarking on your journey with God:
- Every journey is unique, refrain from comparing your journey with another persons’.
- Do not expect your pastor or anyone else to know where you are heading, they can only encourage you, nobody has the answer except God.
- From experience, no journey is easy, you just need to remain strong in the Lord and persevere.
- There is always a reward at the end of every journey, God is a rewarder.
- Journeys are seasonal, when one ends, another begins. The journey ends when we leave this world or when Jesus comes.
- Do not take short cuts, it will only pull you back.
- Know the right people to speak to regarding your journey, be selective, remember Satan knows you are on a journey too.
- Soak yourself in prayer and fasting it makes the journey bearable.
- Pray according to the direction of the Holy Spirit, every journey path you decide to take with God comes from God and not the enemy.
- Do not engage in self-pity, it is not worth it.

True my dearest sister. God didn’t promised us that the journey will be easy but that he will be with us every step of the way. I thank God for people like you who took the bold step of faith. Your reward is great in heaven. Amen
Encouraging words Sis. May God continue to increase you in wisdom and bless the works of your hands. It’s a reminder for us all that it’s not about seeking comfort but fulfilling the calling God has made in our lives until we complete our journey.
