How to Choose the Right Church in Nigeria.

Okelerin First Baptist Church, Ogbomosho, Nigeria.

Nigerians are very religious people who believe in attending one place of worship or another regularly: be it churches, mosques, or other places of worship. On Sundays, one will witness many people heading towards churches and strangely enough even mosques. Majority of church services begin as early as 7.30 am as far as I know.

“Churches” in Lagos are on every nook and corner. Some of these churches may not have sound scriptural teachings therefore, it is wise to wait on the Lord patiently before joining permanently.

Here are some tips on how to choose the right church in Nigeria:

  • Bring it before God. Pray that God will show you the right church to attend.
  • Do not be hasty. Take your time and be focused.
  • Research and select a few to visit with an open mind.
  • Most churches will want you to become a member, do not feel pressurised until you are sure.

The custom of some Churches in Nigeria:

  • Some churches’ sitting arrangement could be restrictive meaning that people sit too close together, resulting in being uncomfortable.
  • Be mindful of how you dress. Some churches believe that women should cover their heads and not wear trousers within the church building.
  • During church services, offerings may be collected more than once, with the congregation encouraged to dance to the front to put their offering in a bowl.
  • Debit card machines referred to as POS is available for use in some churches.
  • Nigerians love to dance. However, the music may get noisy. Avoid sitting too close to the speakers, if you do not like your music loud.

Be Aware! There are churches and there are churchesDo not visit a church just because they call themselves such. There are false churches all over the place, do your research prayerfully.

All in all, as Christians, it is essential to be part of a church. Apostle Paul said in Hebrews 10:25: “not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”(NIV)

It will be great to know your experiences as you search for the right church. Please share in the comment section below.

Thanks.

Being in the wrong church can be destructive and can even cause one to miss heaven, so I agree we need to prayerfully select church of Christ. Thank you ma.

Very true the funny thing is that the same applies to all parts of the world these days as one must be sure it is where God wants one to be. May the Holy spirit lead us direct one.

Yep, our blessings are where God”s cloud hovers. God chooses the dwelling place where to worship him. (Deuteronomy 12)
